Being an Asian- American woman she is discriminated and for that she has to change original  surname

Chloe Bennet,  the famous actress  of Marvel’s TV show had recently tweeted back after being  criticized for changing  her original Chinese surname,  Wang.

The famous actress feels that Hollywood is racist and to that wouldn’t cast her because of her Chinese surname.  She strongly confides that being an Asian- American woman she is discriminated and for that particular she has to change original  surname, Wang to Bennet.  She said that the film and media industries, the Hollywood  rather treated Asian talent unfairly.

The actress said “whether it be casting Asian actors in stereotypical or racially insensitive  roles, whitewashing Asian characters by using white  actors, paying  them less than their white colleagues or not casting them at all.”

For the criticism she replied “Changing my last name  doesn’t  change the fact that my  is half Chinese, that I lived in China, speak mandarin, or that I was culturally raised both American and Chinese. It means  I had to pay my rent, and Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t  cast me with a last name that made them  uncomfortable.”

She also added, “I’m  doing everything  I can,  with the platform I have, to make sure no one has to change their name again, just so they can get work. So kindly love, fuck off.”

This comment of Bennet actually caught attention of Ken Jeong another accomplished Asian-American actor who apparently  replied “Mad respect @ChloeBennet4 for the win.” Bennet’s father is Chinese and mother is white.  Initially  she did not use a stage name. She once pursued a singing career in China using her real name, Chloe Wang.

But she faced racism regarding  her surname and to that she being  an Asian-American.Sources say that Bennet told the Daily Beast “Oh, the first audition I went on after I changed  my name,  I got booked. So that’s a pretty clear little  snippet of hoe Hollywood  works.”

The Marvel TV star also added something for her fans, she said, “I want to be clear because some of my Asian-American  fans seem to think I did that [name change] because I didn’t want to be noticed  as Chinese,  but it’s so the opposite.”

Bennet said that she was very proud  to be half Chinese and she  wanted her fans to know that she only changed her name so she could  be seen in the industry  more and  not to hide the Chinese part of her.

As an open comment, everyone  did not agree  with her choice of using a “white-sounding” surname. Some people  even claimed that Bennet  is taking advantage  of her privilege as a woman  for which she can pass as a white actress.

There were also many people  who favoured her and supported her to fight against  the systematic  oppression of minorities in Hollywood. Some also said that  she does not need to conform  her name to fit within the  dominant culture’s  standards and that it was not too late change her name back to Chloe Wang.

However  there are many support  for Bennet’s decision  to use her fame and speak out against  racism  in Hollywood. This would  not only change the phase of Hollywood  but also bring an overall  change in the society. People  however  need to overcome  this and come out from  the  narrow-mindedness.

Each one should  be respected and judged merit wise and by race.
