Recently the First Lady received a backlash when she was seen wearing high stilettos on her way to the Harvey stricken area in Texas. When it comes to playing dress up, both the former First Lady and the current First Lady have the privilege of wearing the most renowned names in the fashion industry and that too for free. The real reason why we are talking about their fashion statements is the fact that every look that is put together for the FLOTUS is well thought and planned. After all, she needs to be somebody people can relate to and appearance or the way FLOTUS dresses up talks a lot more than just her fashion sense.
While Obama was seen as the “mom-in-chief” who wore much cheaper clothes, the new First Lady is reported to spend more money on her looks. While Obama swore by J. Crew sweaters, Trump is more associated with top designers like Dolce and Gabbana. While Trump has the “Richie Rich” image, Obama tends to be more “down to earth” with her looks. So here, the question arises- Is Trump really spending way more than Obama used to or is she just a victim of the press? To answer the question, let us look at some style statements made by both the ladies during their term.
For both her inauguration, Michelle favored designer Jason Wu and both were custom made which makes the gowns priceless. Melania also had Herve Pierre have her a custom made gown for her inauguration which makes this gown too priceless. While Trump struggled to find designers, Obama was favoured by the designers through her term as FLOTUS which helped her pull off many iconic looks. One of them was when she wore a custom made Versace gown which should cost at least $12,000.
Melania showed her “Mom-in-chief” self when she showed up in a $75 pink top from J. Crew paired with $228 pink J. Brand jeans and pink leather flats. One of the biggest fashion regrets to Obama is when she stepped out of Air Force One for a hike on Grand Canyon wearing very unflattering shorts.
During the 2017 Joint Address to Congress, Melania adorned herself in a $5000 Michael Kors suit jacket and a matching skirt of $4600. If we compare it to the outfit worn by Michelle at 2015 State of the Union
Address, we can see a drastic difference. Obama wore a $1,595 Michael Kors suit jacket on the occasion.
By now, I assume you already know that Michelle loves shopping at J. Crew. She wore apparel of this particular retailer most of the time and also at the White House. At one occasion she was seen wearing a $29.50 shirt and $228 jacket in the White House garden that she looked after with care. When the current youngest First Child and First Lady officially moved to the White House, Melania Trump was seen wearing an outfit which had a total price tag of at least $14,110.
“Throughout the book, the First Lady, always beautifully coiffed, wears a different J.Crew sweater to match the season (marigold yellow for summer, argyle for fall),” Vogue noted in its review of Obama’s 2012 book “American Grown.”
A $29.50 shirt and a $228 jacket are just two of the many examples of the first lady wearing J. Crew in the garden.
Michelle had to face criticism when she was seen wearing $540 pair of Lanvin sneakers which she paired with J. Crew sweater when she went to volunteer at a food bank with Second Lady Jill Biden. Melania also received a similar kind of backlash when she wore a $1,150 pair of Rene Caovilla sandals during her visit to an abuse prevention nonprofit organization HomeSafe in April.
When Melania attended the annual G-7 summit in May, she made headlines because of her pricy look. She reportedly had a bag from the fashion label Dolce and Gabbana which costs $1,630 when she met the spouses of the most powerful world leaders. If you remember Michelle’s first trip as FLOTUS to United Kingdom, you probably remember her very casual attitude towards fashion. Her style was chic as well as very affordable. When she met Prime Minister Gordon, she was seen in a $474 outfit which included her pencil skirt, tank top and a cardigan and was praised for her lookbook.
Melania Trump wore a Roksanda “Margot” dress at the RNC which cost $2,190 and paired it with $675 nude Christian Louboutin heels. It was reported that after her speech, the dress sold out with an hour or so. Michelle chose a $995 custom made blue dress by designer Christian Sirjano when she attended the DNC and paired the dress with $675 metallic Jimmy Choo heels.
